*From 1 to 31 October 2026, Cybersecurity Awareness Month (the European Cybersecurity Month, known in France as "Cybermois") raises awareness of cyber threats among citizens, businesses, local authorities and public administrations. Check the sender, strengthen your passwords, enable two-factor authentication: essential habits... but they don't answer one key question: where do your documents actually live, and what happens if they are encrypted by ransomware tomorrow morning?*

## What is Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026?

**Cybermois** is the French edition of the European Cybersecurity Month, run every October by Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr to promote good digital security habits.

These individual habits are the first line of defence. But once October is over, one question remains for CIOs and CISOs: **is awareness enough when the document assets themselves remain vulnerable, on foundations you don't control?**

## Are good habits enough without the right tools?

Relying solely on everyone's vigilance to secure an organisation is like building on sand: one wrong click, one overloaded morning, and everything tips over.

So the real question is: **do your teams have tools designed to help them work both better and more securely?** When the document platform natively includes co-editing (no more versions circulating by email), secure link sharing (no more attachments), approval workflows and activity logging, security stops being a constraint that slows people down: it becomes a by-product of the tool itself. Users are more efficient *and* less exposed, without having to think about it.

And the problem has to be tackled at its root. As long as the document foundation remains an end-of-support SharePoint or a Microsoft 365 suite subject to US extraterritorial laws such as the Cloud Act, with data accessible on request regardless of where the datacenter is located, **awareness, however well delivered, only treats the symptom, never the cause**.

It is to get out of this exposure that organisations such as the [Haute-Savoie Departmental Council](https://www.ceo-vision.com/en/content/rex-outward-migration-sharepoint-departmental-council-haute-savoie-74) (3,000 users, over one million documents) and the [City of Nanterre](https://www.ceo-vision.com/en/content/testimonial-city-nanterre-exits-teams-and-sharepoint) have left their Microsoft infrastructure (Teams and SharePoint) for a structured DMS.

Control over your document assets starts with the choice of foundation: sovereign, maintained, and secure by design.

## Why is the file server ransomware's number one target?

In most organisations, documents still live on **file servers**: folder trees built up over years, access rights that have become unreadable, no versioning, no traceability. This is precisely what makes them the **prime target for ransomware**: a single compromised workstation, and every network share can be encrypted within hours, with no way of knowing who accessed what, or what was exfiltrated.

An infrastructure with no memory, no compartmentalisation and no logs cannot be protected through training alone: it calls for a [DMS designed to counter ransomware](https://www.ceo-vision.com/en/content/security-anti-ransomware).

## The 5 pillars of a ransomware-resistant DMS

Mirroring the individual habits promoted by the campaign, here are the five pillars delivered by a **sovereign collaborative DMS** platform such as GoFAST:

1. **Trace every access to documents:** every view, edit or download is logged. In the event of a security incident, you know immediately who did what, when, and on which document.
2. **Version systematically:** native versioning lets you restore documents to their previous state after malicious encryption, where a file server leaves the organisation helpless.
3. **Classify sensitive data:** classification levels (C0–C3) with associated clearances, making it impossible for unauthorised users to extract sensitive documents. A framework relied upon every day by institutions such as the [French Senate](https://www.ceo-vision.com/en/content/senat) and the [French Police Academy](https://www.ceo-vision.com/en/content/testimonial-national-police-migration-their-internal-dms-and-portal-gofast).
4. **Compartmentalise by entities and spaces:** thanks to logical separation between departments or organisations and space-level confidentiality, a compromised account only exposes a limited scope, never the entire document estate.
5. **Prepare document business continuity:** a continuity environment isolated from production (the spirit of the NIS 2 directive and the very purpose of [GoFAST Protect](https://www.ceo-vision.com/en/content/gofast-protect-sensitive-data)) so the organisation keeps running even if the main information system is compromised.

These five pillars are not a matter of individual behaviour but of architecture: they are built into a sovereign open-source DMS, hosted on-premise or as a dedicated On-Premise SaaS, beyond the reach of extraterritorial laws such as the Cloud Act.

## This October, I take action for my documents too

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is the right time to move from awareness to action. Ageing file servers, end-of-support SharePoint, uncontrolled access rights: assess the real exposure of your document assets.
